In the end, I had to Walk Away: As I continued to paint the past creation was gone, so I focused on the future possibilities, they both consumed me so much that it got to the point where I just wanted to toss the painting into the sea (I live by a lake). I had forgotten about the now, I finally told myself to Walk Away. When I did my impatience left, my disappointment disappeared, and my desire to succeed diminished. In returning I focused on the now...and the sea was thrown onto the canvas.

Have you ever felt torn? In the Torn Series, I tore pieces of paper; this freed me. First I destroyed, then I rebuilt; the theme evolved. Forged in personally difficult times this is my favorite group of paintings yet. The Torn Series shows how pain and re-creation can be beautiful "to me". Enjoy!

Map of Torn is by far my favorite piece, It was created every morning before I went to visit my mom, who was passing away from cancer. Each day closer to her death I felt torn, and it created this map of my journey of being torn with loss.

This piece of Art was a challenge. Struggles within my life changed the piece several times. I tore paper and tore more and applied and worked over and over until you see what is here. This is another favorite because I see the beauty in the challenge that helped create this piece.

This was the first of the series, as I experimented with the tearing and working it onto the canvas, the reveal was a surprise. To me it resembles the stomach. As I have often had difficulty with eating because I have Chrohn's Disease. The disease does leave you torn at times.
But you may see something else in how it speaks to you, everyone does, which I find interesting to hear!
I made these puzzle pieces for my mother. She adored puzzles.
When mom connected a piece, a little celebratory exclamation would always accompany it. Now imagine each piece she connected as another event in her life. The immense satisfaction of finding a piece and joining it to the others was reflected in the way she experienced joy in her life.
I long to experience a semblance of her joy of life as I explore and create more works in this series.

I used Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Black and some White paint in this series. Every time I added the white, I instinctively wanted to "erase it" with the other colours. The works became very dark and brooding. Possibly so had I.

I have developed my technique through years of painting and studying. It always amazes me when I start to paint time slips by and the day is quickly over. I get lost in my work. I am even more astounded that in my 50th year of living, I have been so fortunate to do what I love. Sometimes I am disenchanted and frustrated with work that does not go as planned, yet I remain encouraged by my results.
